ACH vs instant rails: when speed is worth paying for
ACH has moved most of America’s money for fifty years. Instant rails settle in about a minute. The interesting question is not which is better; it is which of your payouts deserve which.
The two shapes of a payment
ACH works in batches: payments are collected, sent in scheduled windows, and settle on a schedule measured in business days. It is reliable and very cheap.
Instant rails like RTP and FedNowwork one payment at a time, around the clock, including weekends and holidays. When the recipient’s bank supports the rail, funds are typically available in about a minute.
When ACH is fine
Predictable, scheduled payments where nobody is watching the clock. Monthly vendor invoices. Payroll that runs on a fixed date. If the recipient already knows when money arrives, ACH does the job at the lowest cost.
When instant is worth it
Any payout where the recipient is waiting. Prize money after a tournament. A creator cashing out earnings. An artist’s royalty share after a release. Refunds and make-goods. In these cases the speed is the product: recipients notice, and they remember which platforms pay fast.
A useful rule of thumb
Ask whether the recipient checks their account after the event that earned them the money. If yes, that payout is a candidate for instant rails. If money simply arrives on a schedule, ACH is usually enough.
Why platforms use both
Not every bank supports instant rails yet, amounts and cutoffs differ by rail, and costs differ too. A payout platform routes each payment over the best available rail so senders do not have to think about any of this.
Where DiscoFi fits
DiscoFi makes the ACH-or-instant decision per payment, at send time: each payout routes over the fastest rail the recipient’s bank accepts across RTP, FedNow and Visa Direct, landing in 60 seconds or less on instant rails,* See Instant Pay disclosure and falls back to ACH on standard timelines when no instant rail is available. Either way the whole batch reconciles to one ledger. Costs follow the same decision: pricing is sized to your payout volume and rail mix.
See the routing decide. We’ll send a batch with mixed recipients and show which payments go instant and which fall back.
